Choosing the right platform for your clients

Platform selection is a topic that generates a lot of debate. On the surface, the majority of platforms in the market offer a similar proposition: a range of tax wrappers and investment solutions to help you meet client demand, deliver efficiencies and reduce risk within your operating model.

Most adviser firms will have done some form of client segmentation in adherence to the FCA’s Product Intervention and Product Governance Sourcebook (PROD) legislation. More information on meeting your PROD responsibilities can be found here.

An example of a client-centric approach might be to look at the life stages of your clients. This should help highlight the level and type of service that should be offered to clients in each segment.

It would seem sensible to complete this type of analysis before structuring the proposition the adviser firm will offer, rather than structuring the proposition and then trying to fit clients around it.

Client-led investments solutions will be developed within the client segmentation exercise. Adviser firms may be considering a range of risk based funds or to run their model portfolios in-house or outsource model portfolios to a Discretionary Fund Manager.

Whatever centralised investment solutions are adopted, the adviser firm should ensure the platform(s) they select can support these solutions and offer value to both clients and the business.
